Chelsea Clinton was honored on Friday at Variety magazine’s Power of Women New York luncheon, but things took an awkward turn thanks to Saturday Night Live star Vanessa Bayer’s ill-fated attempt at humor. Bayer introduced Clinton and the other women being honored — Jessica Chastain, Gayle King, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, Tina Knowles, Shari Redstone — with a speech that included a jab at Hillary Clinton’s loss in the presidential election.
“We have some pretty amazing honorees this afternoon,” Bayer told the audience. “Jessica Chastain, Gayle King, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, Tina Knowles, Shari Redstone, and Chelsea Clinton.” The crowd applauded dutifully.
“And they all have one thing in common,” Bayer added. “None of their moms are president.” Crickets.
Later, Clinton took to the podium and, after receiving a standing ovation, and responded to Bayer’s miscue. “Vanessa, we may be able to say in this room today that no one’s mother is currently president, but someday, someone’s will be.”
Clinton was being honored for her work with Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

And her mother appeared earlier this month at the Women in the World New York Summit for what was her first interview since the election. It was a wide-ranging and interesting discussion with Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times. In case you missed it, watch the full interview and all of the highlights below.
