Janelle Monaé proposes sex strike to motivate men to defend women’s rights

By WITW Staff on April 11, 2017

In a recent interview with Marie Claire, actress and singer Janelle Monaé proposed a very simple, if severe solution to encourage men to fight for equal rights: Stop having sex with them.

No more Netflix and chill? That will definitely get their attention.

The actress, who most recently appeared in the Oscar nominated film Hidden Figures, was a speaker at the Women’s March on Washington in January. When asked for her thoughts on respecting women as a whole, Monaé described her unique perspective on the issue. “People have to start respecting the vagina,” she declared. “Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex.”

While her proposal would most likely seem drastic to many, Monaé clarified her position explaining that she has nothing but love for the opposite sex. “I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it.”

An all-around outspoken style icon, Monaé went on to describe how she believes women should rebel against societal pressures and images and refuse to conform to the gender norms that are imposed upon the female image. “I have learned there is power in saying no. I have agency. I get to decide.”
