The Women in the World New York Summit kicks off tonight! Check out this stellar lineup

April 5, 2017

It’s here! The 2017 Women in the World Summit kicks off on the evening of April 5, ushering in three days of compelling panels and inspiring speakers. World leaders will take to the stage, alongside powerhouse activists, fearless whistleblowers, brilliant innovators, and stars from the worlds of sports and entertainment.

Over the course of the Summit, we’ll hear from leaders shaping the political agenda in the U.S. and abroad. In a return appearance to the Summit, we will be joined by The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, after her momentous run for the presidency. She will be introduced with ruthless wit by TV host and producer Samantha Bee, and interviewed by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will speak about how being a feminist, teacher and father informs his priorities for Canada. The first woman to be First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, will weigh in on her country’s uncertain relationship to the E.U. after Brexit. Also joining us is one of President Trump’s top diplomats — U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley.

Prepare to hear from an impressive range of women who have demonstrated formidable courage — journalists reporting under the threat of harassment, imprisonment or even assassination; whistleblowers who risked everything to shine a light on Australia’s refugee crisis; doctors who are working on the front lines in Syria, and a vigilant flight attendant whose own early experience of being trafficked helped her save a boy from the same fate.

As repressive ideologies threaten basic freedoms around the world, we will hear from women who are at the vanguard of resistance – speaking out against Islamic extremism in France, white supremacy in the United States, and honor killings in Pakistan. Shareen Ibrahim, a young Yazidi woman who was captured and enslaved by ISIS, will be joined by Maria Bello, whose film Sun Ladies explores the lives of brave Yazidi women who’ve taken up arms against ISIS.

The script will get flipped on gender stereotyping during panels on advertising, leadership and parenting. Celebrated novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Planned Parenthood Federation of America president, Cecile Richards, weigh in on how to raise daughters and sons to be feminists. And a panel of experts will reveal how gender bias in advertising is actually bad for business.

Familiar faces from the big and small screens will also share their hard-won insights. We’ll hear from TV host Gretchen Carlson, who triumphed in fighting sexual harassment at Fox News, about how to empower women in the workplace. And actress Scarlett Johansson will engage in an intimate conversation with Thrive Global CEO Arianna Huffington, about a range of topics from activism to motherhood.

Catch all these exciting speakers—and more—during the Summit. The event, which will be held at the David H. Koch Theater, will be live streamed on the Women in the World homepage on Wednesday, from 6 p.m. EST. You can view the complete program here.
