Piers Morgan gets a lesson in gender equality from Stephen Hawking

March 21, 2017

Piers Morgan, host of Good Morning Britain and professional Twitter troll, had the honor of interviewing Professor Stephen Hawking on Monday. According to The Huffington Post, Morgan made the (fallacious) assertion that the prominence of several women in British politics constitutes “scientific evidence” that gender equality exists. Hawking was quick to note that science is not the core issue at play.

“It is not scientific proof of gender equality that is required, but general acceptance that women are at least the equals of men or better,” Hawking said. “If we factor in high-power women in Europe as well, such as [German Chancellor] Angela Merkel, it seems we are witnessing a seismic shift for women to accede to high-level positions in politics and society.”

“I welcome these signs of women’s liberation,” he continued. “But there may still be a gap between those women achieving high public status and those in the private sector.”

Morgan has previously come under fire for his, erm, questionable views of women and feminism. On the day of the Women’s March, for instance, he tweeted, “I’m planning a ‘Men’s March’ to protest at the creeping global emasculation of my gender by rabid feminists. Who’s with me?”

Hawking, happily, proved himself to be more of an ally to women than his interviewer. When Morgan asked the professor if he is a feminist, Hawking replied in the affirmative.

“Yes,” he said, simply. “I have always supported women’s rights.”
