Photo of Wall Street bro humping ‘Fearless Girl’ statue shows ‘why we need feminism’

On International Women’s Day, an investment management firm installed a statue named “Fearless Girl” staring down the famous “Charging Bull” in New York’s financial district. While it quickly gained attention and praise for its depiction of female empowerment and resistance, one suited-up Wall Street bro clearly did not get the message and thought it would be hilarious to “hump” the statue. A passerby at the time, Alexis Kaloyanides, caught the man on camera, and shared a photo of the disturbing display along with her shock and discomfort at his behavior in a Facebook post that quickly went viral. “Almost as if out of central casting, some Wall Street finance broseph appeared and started humping the statue while his gross date rape-y friends laughed and cheered him on,” she wrote in her post. “He pretended to have sex with the image of a little girl. Douchebags like this are why we need feminism.”

Her post has been shared on Facebook nearly 30,000 times, with many people expressing their disgust and disbelief at the man’s behavior. “This is just further perpetuating a mentality of ‘boys will be boys,’ and that ‘it’s okay, it’s a joke, just brush it off,’” Kaloyanides told Inside Edition. “This young man likely has a mother, a sister perhaps, a girlfriend, a wife — who knows? I’m getting tired of making excuses and laughing it off. I for one am not gonna laugh it off anymore.”
