10-year-old girl killed as a ‘human sacrifice’ to ‘cure’ man of paralysis

By WITW Staff on March 7, 2017

After finding the body of a 10-year-old girl inside a bag, police in the south Indian state of Karnataka have arrested several people on charges of abducting and murdering the child. The girl is believed to have been killed as a “human sacrifice” on the instructions of a “sorcerer” who advised a paralyzed man’s brother and sister that only her death would undo the “black magic” affecting their sibling. They have both been arrested. A 17 year old boy has also been arrested in connection with the murder. “There are a few more people who have abetted the crime. We are investigating it from all angles. So more arrests cannot be ruled out,” senior police officer B Ramesh told BBC Hindi’s Imran Qureshi. Police dispersed a mob who, on hearing the news, gathered around the brother and sister’s home and began throwing stones.
