Senior VP at Uber resigns after failing to disclose sexual harassment claims made against him

Uber’s new senior vice president of engineering has departed the company after a very short stint. Amit Singhal was reportedly forced to resign after failing to tell his new employer about sexual harassment claims that allegedly led to his resignation from Google in early 2016. According to Recode executive editor Kara Swisher, Singhal had hidden the reason for his departure from Google during interviews, and Uber hadn’t heard “any hint of the circumstances of his departure from Google” despite “extensive” background checks.

The news of Singhal’s ouster comes with the company already scrambling to deal with claims made in a now viral blog post by former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, who detailed enduring retaliation from the company after she (and others) reported her manager for inappropriate sexual conduct. In response to Fowler’s claim, Uber has hired former Attorney General Eric Holder to lead an independent investigation into the allegations.

Google is also facing questions about its own harassment problems as the company deals with reports that it allowed Singhal to resign and even threw him a farewell party despite the company reportedly determining the victim’s claims against him to be “credible.” Complicating the matter further, a former Google engineer, Kelly Ellis, shared stories of her own experiences of harassment at the tech giant in a series of tweets on Monday.

Ellis, who quit Google in 2015 after four years with the company, had previously detailed instances of harassment that included being told by a superior that it was “taking all of [his] self-control not to grab [her] ass.”
