Women are planning to protest the sexist message on a controversial billboard that recently popped up next to a North Carolina highway. The billboard, located on an offshoot of Interstate 40 between Winston-Salem and Greensboro, reads, “Real men provide. Real women appreciate it.” According to the owner of the billboard, the group that paid for the space doesn’t want to be identified, leaving a mystery as to who is behind it. What is not a mystery is reaction to the antiquated message.

“It’s absolutely, absolutely insulting to single mothers, to women who have careers whether they are small careers or big careers,” Molly Grace, a local boutique owner said, adding that the message seems as if it’s meant to silence women. “I take it as a really deliberate jab at women who demand equality and demand to be seen as equals,” Grace told local TV station WXII.

Meanwhile, others who are offended by the incendiary seven words are using social media to organize a protest on Sunday. The ‘Saying Nope to this‘ Facebook page has all of the details on the demonstration, including its mission: To counteract the “harmful message” by gathering a huge collection of billboards and signs with alternative messages that are positive.

The organizers also added a note about the nature of the protest.

“We are NOT protesting that the sign is capable of existing, or the people who put it up, or the ad agency, or the right to put it up. We are protesting patriarchy and sexism, and that this antiquated way of thinking about women exists at all. We are protesting the implied demand that women be silent and appreciate, regardless of whatever circumstances, their role as non-providers,” it reads.
