Kanye West picks hijab-wearing model for his New York fashion show

By WITW Staff on February 16, 2017

At New York Fashion Week, Kanye West put on a presentation for “Yeezy Season 5,” his fashion line. Besides expensive sportswear and the famed Adidas x Yeezy trainers, one of the big eye-catching moments of the night was hijab-wearing model Halima Aden, in her first-ever catwalk gig. Here she is making her big debut.

It’s still rare to see models wearing the Islamic headdress on the runway, but Aden is remarkable for other reasons as well. The 19-year old was born in a refugee camp in Kenya and became the first person in her family to move to the United States. She gained notoriety when she ran for Miss Minnesota and became the first contestant to wear the hijab throughout the competition, as well as a burkini for the swimsuit portion of the event. While still a student at Saint Cloud University in Minnesota, she also signed with IMG Models and caught the attention of the famous rapper, who invited her to make her groundbreaking runway debut, complementing her hijab with a full length fur coat and heels.
