Who is Gavin Grimm, the student mentioned by Laverne Cox at the Grammys?

February 13, 2017

As she introduced Lady Gaga during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards ceremony, Laverne Cox urged viewers to “Google Gavin Grimm.”

“He’s going to the Supreme Court in March,” Cox, a transgender actress and activist, added. “Hashtag stand with Gavin.”

Grimm, according to Time’s Kathy Steinmetz, is a transgender high school senior, who sued his Virginia school board because it barred him from using the boys’ bathrooms. After Grimm came out as transgender during his sophomore year, his bathroom use soon “became the subject of incendiary school board meetings where he was called a ‘lady’ and once compared to a dog that wants to pee on fire hydrants. Eventually the school board voted to require Grimm to use ‘alternative facilities,’ which the ACLU lawyers characterize as unequal treatment and discrimination.”

Grimm has argued that the board violated Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear his case in March, according to The Washington Post, but it is possible that the case will be halted in its progression to the high court.

In May, the Obama administration issued a directive to public schools, urging them to let students use bathrooms that align with their gender identity. But the Trump administration appears to be rolling back on this directive. Should it be rescinded completely, Grimm’s case may be remanded to a lower court.

Amid these uncertain circumstances, Grimm seems to be celebrating Cox’s support. He told the Post that he had “no idea” the actress was going to mention his name during the Grammys. “I was just so thrilled because I love her,” he said. “She’s just a beautiful person inside and out. I was really touched and thrilled and honored that that was the first thing out of her mouth.”
