A 23-year-old woman named Zarina from the northern province of Balkh in Afghanistan was reportedly in stable condition in hospital after being tied up and having both her ears cut off by her husband in a domestic assault. Zarina said she had no prior warning of the attack, realizing what was happening only as her husband suddenly woke her from her sleep.
Zarina, who was married to her husband when she was 13, had said that relations between the two “were not good.” In another interview, she added that her husband had attempted to prevent her from visiting her parents and accused her of “talking to strange men” when she went to see them. According to police, Zarina’s husband is still on the run from authorities.
Zarina’s case mirrors other disturbing domestic abuse cases that have occurred in Afghanistan in recent years — including January last year, when an Afghan woman had her nose cut off by her husband after she objected to him taking a 6-year-old girl as his second wife.
