Malia Obama praised for showing up and taking part in protest

January 30, 2017

Malia Obama, who is currently taking in indies at the Sundance Film Festival, reportedly attended a festival protest against the controversial Dakota Access pipeline.

The 18-year-old’s presence was confirmed by actress Shailene Woodley, who also attended the event in Park City, Utah. “It was amazing to see Malia,” Woodley told Democracy Now. “[S]he recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children.”

The proposed pipeline would cross a river near Native American land, potentially contaminating water sources and damaging cultural sites of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. After heated protests against its construction, President Obama halted plans for the pipeline until it could be rerouted. Last week, however, President Trump took executive action to commence construction once again. For more on the story, watch the video below.
