Well, Inauguration Day is here and it’s off to an awkward start. The Obamas greeted the Trumps at the White House this morning before the outgoing and incoming first families took part in the tradition of morning tea. Obviously, there was an abundance of news cameras to capture the moment that the two families met on the front steps of the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. After Trump and Obama shared a hearty handshake, the president-elect turned to the first lady. There was a split-second of uncertainty over whether they should shake hands or exchange a kiss on the cheek.
The two opted for a kiss on the cheek — two in fact, as Trump grasped the first lady by the arms.
Given the stinging rhetoric Michelle Obama used in criticizing Trump while campaigning for Hillary Clinton and the fact that gender loomed so large over the 2016 election, this had to be an uncomfortable moment for the first lady on some level. But the moment quickly passed and the awkwardness continued when incoming first lady Melania Trump emerged from a black SUV bearing a gift. She handed a Tiffany box to Michelle Obama, who was confused as to what to do with the gift. Then, President Obama took the gift from the first lady. He also looked bewildered, disappeared for a few seconds and then reappeared without it before the two families stood together and mugged for the cameras. Watch the whole exchange below.
