Man sentenced to life without parole for raping and impregnating 10-year-old girl

By WITW Staff on January 17, 2017

Rony Otoniel Mendez, a 26-year-old Guatemalan man, was convicted by a Florida jury of raping and impregnating a 10-year-old girl and sentenced last week to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In a Facebook post, the state’s attorney office praised the work of law enforcement in “bringing this sexual predator to justice.” Mendez abused the child at least three times starting in 2013, when she was just 9 years old. By November of 2014, the girl’s mother took her to the doctor for tests following a vomiting spell. A test of her urine revealed that she was pregnant and she ended up giving birth to a child in May 2015, according to The Daily Mail. Menendez had fled to his native country of Guatemala after finding out about the pregnancy, but was extradited to the U.S. earlier this year after DNA tests confirmed that he was the child’s father.
