‘Resting bitch-face’

Why this woman didn’t clap during Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech

January 10, 2017

A clip of Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech on Sunday showed an audience member clapping enthusiastically in approval as the acting legend delivered her remarks … and, behind the woman, the camera spotted another woman in the audience, arms folded, looking unamused.

A GIF of her response was promptly shared thousands of times on social media by people amused by the apparent juxtaposition.

Buzzfeed discovered that the woman in the clip is Sharon Waxman, founder and CEO of the entertainment news site The Wrap. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Waxman explained that she didn’t disapprove of what Streep said at all. Much to the contrary, in fact. “As a human being and not only as a journalist, I thought her speech was moving, and brave,” Waxman said. She added,  “Sadly, I apparently have a significant ‘resting bitch face.”

Her comments show she was far from disgruntled by the speech.
