‘Oh my God’

2 sisters reunited with their mother after being separated for 40 years

January 6, 2017

Two sisters, Starla Medlock and Jeannie Toomey, who had been separated from their mother when they were just 1 and 2 years old, respectively, were able to reunite with her this week after four decades. They were separated when their parents divorced and their father received full custody, while their mother, who is Thai, remained in England — or so they thought. “We asked our dad a lot about our mom, and he never spoke ill of our mom to us,” Starla recalled of their father, who died six years ago. “He just said that she couldn’t speak English because she’s full-blooded Thai, and he said she thought since we were American and he was in the military, he could take better care of us and provide us a better life than she could.”

The women never forget about their mother, though, searching databases and birth records, but had pretty much given up the fight and decided to “close that chapter” when they received an unexpected Facebook message on December 30. “I open up my Facebook and look at message requests,” said Starla. “There’s a picture I see of this family, and I see mine and Jeannie’s baby picture. I’m laying in bed and my husband’s laying next to me and I’m going, ‘Oh my God.’ It started out saying, ‘This is not a prank,’ and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God.’” Lani’s current husband, Mark Szarmach, who lives with her in Pueblo, Colorado, had been able to track the two women down with the little information they had, after he found the obituary of their father, John Thompson. On New Year’s Eve, the newly reunited family video-chatted for the first time together, and on Tuesday Mark and Lani flew down to Kansas City to meet the sisters. “I’m totally beside myself. I have my whole new family here,” said Jeannie. “One thing I have always lived by is the quote, ‘With God all things are possible,’” Starla added. Lani was “really happy” to finally find her daughters, saying she was hoping to cook them Thai food for all the meals together they’ve missed. “We’re going to go to the Asian store to look for all kinds of food and I’m going to cook for them. I’ve waited so long to cook for them.” Watch footage of the emotion reunion below.
