Despite a 10 year period of estrangement between Reynolds and Carrie Fisher during the Star Wars actress’s youth, the mother and daughter had reportedly enjoyed a very close relationship in recent years. Fisher had in the past spoken about the desire to escape from the shadow of her mother, whose television career ultimately spanned nearly 60 years.

Reynolds was best known for her iconic role in Singin’ In the Rain. She starred in dozens of other films – including Tammy and The Bachelor, Goodbye Charlie, The Pleasure of his Company, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Fisher, who had become iconic in movie lore after depicting Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, was an accomplished author and script doctor on numerous movies throughout the years. She had also emerged as a strong feminist voice, speaking out against the objectification of women in the entertainment industry when the business was less open to such observations.
