Earlier this year, Candace Payne, a 37-year-old Texas resident, recorded a video of herself in the car wearing a Chewbacca mask for the amusement of her friends and family. Her unbridled enjoyment of the mask – and the iconic Star Wars character’s ‘Wookie’ call – resonated with viewers online. 164 million views later, Payne had herself the most-watched Facebook Live video ever. Since inadvertently making internet history by filming a goofy video in a shop car park, Payne has appeared on the Late Late Show alongside Star Wars director JJ Abrams, released a cover of a Michael Jackson album, and scored a gig as a video blogger with TV network TLC. “We forget that joy calls us to play,” says Candace. “That’s what happened in the car that day. I didn’t care who walked by and saw what I was doing.” Thanks to her newfound celebrity, she added, she is able to spend her days “being [herself] and going out there and meeting people, and sharing the joy.”
Payne did, however, admit to some uncertainty as to why her video in particular garnered so much interest.
“I don’t get it either,” said Payne. “But laughter is a universal language. My video was just joyful and had nothing to do with any agenda.”
