Capricia Penavic Marshall, the former special assistant to the first lady and social secretary during the Clinton Administration, accompanied Hillary Clinton on the road during the final days of her presidential campaign. Originally intending to visit her longtime friend for a day, Marshall ended up spending a week with Clinton on a whirlwind trip across the country — a journey full of rallies, celebrities, parties, and “off-the-record” visits, she recalled to Abigail Pesta in a story for Cosmopolitan.
Those off-the-record visits, or OTRs as Clinton called them, were surprise visits. At a strip mall in Fort Lauderdale, for instance, Marshall recalled people racing down the street for the chance to talk with Clinton. It was events such as these, Marshall said, that helped give Clinton her energy.
Marshall witnessed Clinton onstage with Beyonce and Jay Z in Cleveland, in Raleigh with Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga, at rallies in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, alongside a host of other celebrity appearances — among them Katy Perry, Lebron James, and Pharrell. She saw her speaking with Trayvon’s Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, in Miami, about gun violence and police brutality. At the Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ in Philadelphia, Clinton took part in gospel hymns.
Marshall also shared a number of stories from behind the scenes — including Clinton’s favorite road trip activity. She also described her reaction to the elections results — and why it was, in her opinion, that Clinton really wanted to be president.
