In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired on Monday — her last TV interview as first lady – Michelle Obama reflected on the past eight years and the future ahead of her. Portions of the interview were released last week and her remarks on how she thinks the nation is headed toward hopelessness in the wake of Donald Trump’s election to the presidency made widespread headlines.

Along those lines, the first lady opened up about her conversation with her successor and revealed what she told Melania Trump during their “very pleasant” meeting at the White House two days after the election. “You really don’t know what you don’t know until you’re here,’ Obama said she told Trump, explaining that it was too early to offer her successor any real advice on the role. “The door is open, as I’ve told her, and as Laura Bush told me, you know, and as other first ladies told me.”

However, Obama did not hide her own disappointment at the outcome of the election, saying, “This past election was challenging for me as a citizen. To watch and experience. It was painful.” Answering the ever-returning question of whether she would ever run for office herself, the outgoing first lady said she would not, because she does not want to put her children through it again. “I don’t make stuff up. I’m not coy. I’ve proven that. I’m pretty direct. If I were interested in it, I’d say it. I don’t believe in playing games. It’s not something I would do,” she told Oprah. “But it also speaks to the fact that people don’t really understand how hard this is. And it’s not something that you cavalierly just sort of ask a family to do again.” Oprah also asked her about, in the early days of her husband’s presidency, being labeled an “angry black woman.” Watch her answer in the video below.
