Emma Morano, who is thought to be the oldest person in the world, celebrated her 117th birthday in Italy on Tuesday, Reuters reports. She was surrounded by both friends and doctors, who presented her with a large cake.
Morano was born in 1899, and is believed to be the last living person born in the 19th century. “My life wasn’t so nice,” she told Reuters TV. “I worked in a factory until I was 65, then that was that.”
In an interview with the La Stampa newspaper five years ago, Moran said that her fiancé died in WWI, and she was then forced to marry a man she did not love. “‘Either you agree to marry me or I will kill you’,” Morano claimed her future husband told her. “I was 26. We got married.”
After her infant son died, Morano decided to divorce her abusive husband, and she never remarried. She once told The New York Times that she credits her longevity to persistent singledom, saying she “didn’t want to be dominated by anyone.”
Morano has also attributed her old age to a rather unusual diet: raw eggs and cookies. “I eat two eggs a day and that’s it,” she told AFP News Agency. “I eat cookies. I don’t eat much because I have no teeth.”
