Ginella Massa is Canada’s 1st hijab-wearing news anchor

November 28, 2016

Ginella Massa, a television reporter in Canada, has become the country’s first hijab-wearing news anchor. She has stepped into an 11 p.m. slot at CityNews network in Toronto, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“That’s a wrap!” Massa wrote on Twitter after her first appearance on November 18. “Thankful to have opportunities like this at a time when there is so much hate and vilifying of Muslims. Looking forward to the day when it’s no longer a big deal for someone who looks like me to be anchoring a newscast.”

Massa had previously worked as a reporter for CTV News in Kitchener, which lies two hours outside of Toronto. Her appointment to CityNews has been met with gleeful enthusiasm — and some backlash. “Hatred does exist,” she told THR. “I’ve seen it firsthand: on my Twitter timeline, in the comment sections of articles written about me.”

But the online hostility does not seem to have deterred Massa from her professional objectives. “I’m trying […] to do my job as a journalist,” she said. “I just happen to wear a hijab while doing it.”
