A 28-year-old woman in Iran received 80 lashes as punishment for attending a party where men were present in the city of Mashhad, the nation’s second largest. The lashing, a sentence for a “crime” that took place more than two years ago, left the woman with severe abrasions across the entirety of her back, according to images posted on social media by Masih Alinejad on her popular My Stealthy Freedom Facebook page.
The images posted by Alinejad are part of a series of photos posted over the last few days of women showing their backs with similar injuries after sustaining lashes from authorities over similar violations. She’s been using the hashtag #NoToLashes to draw attention to them.
“This harrowing photo belongs to a young girl in Iran,” the caption with the photo reads. “She was arrested at a mixed-gender party [for being in the company of men that she was not related to] and was arrested. As a punishment, she was sentenced to being lashed. You can see the effects of these lashes on her back.” In an interview posted on the Facebook page, the woman described the brutality of the punishment in excruciating detal. “In the prison, I was lashed while my feet were chained and my hands were shackled. Before they carried out the sentence, they took my photos and my fingerprints [as if I was a criminal]. I was then led to a three-by-four room with a simple chair,” she said, according to the Facebook post.
Another shocking photo shows a woman with deep and severe bruising covering the entirety of her back after she received 80 lashes for having consumed alcohol at a party where men were present.
“For the record, one of these friends was my classmate and an old friend at university and the other arrested person was one of his/her friends that we met at this party,” the Facebook post quotes her as having said. “We were on our way back [home]. Yet, since we were four mixed-gender [and unrelated] youngsters, according to the security forces, it was reason enough to be considered in an illicit relationship. At the court, the judge sentenced us to 80 lashes because we had consumed alcohol — the most painful of kind of lashes [that one could imagine]. These photos were taken one week after the sentence was carried out.”
Alinejad appeared onstage at the Women in the World New York Summit where she addressed the issue of women trying to live normal lives in what continues to be an oppressive Iranian culture. “Women in Iran are breaking the law every day just to be ourselves,” she said.
