Michelle Obama hosted Melania Trump for tea in awkward meeting

By WITW Staff on November 11, 2016

As is traditional in the White House after the conclusion of the presidential election, first lady Michelle Obama hosted future first lady Melania Trump for tea on Thursday. The two reportedly discussed raising children and toured the White House before meeting with their husbands in the Oval Office. Few details were released by Mrs. Obama’s aides on what was reported as the first meeting between the two first ladies, but according to Kate Andersen Brower, author of two books about the White House, the meeting was likely “pure political theater.”

“They don’t have to like each personally, and given what has gone on, I would be surprised if Michelle Obama was chatty with Melania,” said Brower, referring to Melania’s plagiarism of Michelle’s speech at the Republican National Convention and Michelle’s outspoken condemnation of Donald Trump. Bower added that Melania would likely have to make at least one more awkward visit in order to discuss practical domestic matters with the White House staff.
