Florida woman charged delivery room fee after giving birth in her car

November 3, 2016

A Florida woman who gave birth in her car outside the hospital had another surprise waiting for her when she got home — a whopping bill that included a delivery room fee, despite her not having used it. Paula D’Amore said that she and her husband had just arrived at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital when the baby started to crown. Her husband caught the baby’s head, D’Amore said, before nurses rushed out of the hospital to complete the delivery in D’Amore’s Jeep Grand Cherokee.

D’Amore says that the family received a bill in excess of $7,000 for the delivery — including a charge for using the delivery room. D’Amore says she is still going to pay the bill, but that she found it “outrageous” that the hospital felt the need to charge her for a service she didn’t use.

In an emailed statement, the hospital’s vice president for marketing, Thomas Chakurda, said that after review the hospital had determined that the “billing [was] appropriate.” D’Amore, for one, disagrees.
