Obama says sexism is impacting voters’ view of Hillary Clinton

By WITW Staff on November 2, 2016

Sexism is playing a large part in why some prefer Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, according to President Obama. Speaking on Tuesday at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, Obama said that Clinton “is consistently treated differently than just about any other candidate I see out there.”

“There’s a reason why we haven’t had a woman president,” he added.

Noting that Clinton put aside her own ambitions in order to serve as secretary of state, Obama said that Clinton “made me a better president, and she didn’t ask for credit.” And while society approves of “ambitious” men, Obama said that women such as Clinton are penalized for their ambition. “If you’re having problems with this stuff,” Obama asked the men of the crowd, “how much of it is that we’re just not used to it?”

“Has she made mistakes?” Obama continued. “Of course. So have I. There’s nobody in the public arena over the course of 30 years who doesn’t make some. She is a fundamentally good and decent person who knows what she’s doing and will be an outstanding president.” Clinton’s qualifications, Obama said, were being overlooked by people who should know better. “This notion that it’s somehow hard to choose? It shouldn’t be,” Obama said.

Next week’s election, Obama said, would test the “character of our country … will we teach our kids to treat women as objects — or as full and equal citizens capable of doing anything a man does?”

The idea that Trump would fight for the working class, Obama added, was ridiculous. “His entire life he did not have time for anybody who wasn’t rich or a celebrity,” Obama warned, adding that Trump “wouldn’t let you into one of his hotels unless you were cleaning the room.”
