Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton campaign together for 1st time

Two first ladies appeared on the same stage at a presidential rally for the first time in U.S. election history on Thursday in North Carolina. Clinton and Obama emerged to a wild standing ovation and shared a hug, a physical show of mutual admiration between the two that the country simply hadn’t seen before. And the love fest didn’t stop there.

“First ladies, we rock,” Obama told the audience, which responded with loud approval.

“Seriously, is there anyone more inspiring than Michelle Obama?” Clinton asked the raucous crowd when she stood behind the podium. “Maybe it’s especially meaningful to me because I do know something about being first lady of the United States.”

Michelle Obama, who has risen to be Clinton’s fiercest and most effective surrogate in recent weeks continued and expanded on some of the themes she’s already touched on in previous speeches, praising Clinton’s virtue.

“Hillary doesn’t play,” Obama said. “We have never had a more qualified and prepared candidate for the presidency than Hillary Clinton,” she said, referencing Clinton’s experience as a senator and secretary of state. “Yes, more than Barack, more than Bill. So she is absolutely ready to be commander in chief on Day One.” She also touched on the historical gender implications of a victory on November 8. “Yes, she happens to be a woman.”

The tag-team appearance drew possibly Clinton’s biggest crowd to a rally since she launched her campaign — some 11,000 supporters — as the presidential race enters its final stretch. Watch some highlights of Obama’s and Clinton’s remarks in the video below.
