In a heated interview with Fox News host Megyn Kelly late Wednesday, Democratic National Committee interim chair Donna Brazile faced allegations that she leaked a debate question before a town hall event between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. The allegations stemmed from the recent release by WikiLeaks of Clinton campaign chair John Podesta leaked emails — in one email, Brazile allegedly told Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri that she “gets questions in advance.”
Kelly was dogged, repeatedly questioning Brazile on the leaked email, asking how she obtained the debate question from CNN, but Brazile defended herself by suggesting that the email had been “doctored” and that media should be less quick to use stolen emails as evidence.
“You’re so interested in talking about stolen material, you’re like a thief that want to bring into the night the things that you found that was in the gutter,” Brazile told Kelly.
Kelly noted that CNN host Jake Tapper had also speculated that the network’s co-host for the town hall debate, TV One, may have leaked a question to Brazile. But Brazile reiterated that she had not received debate questions from anyone ahead of time.
“Once again, I’ve said it on the record, and I’ll say it on the record, and I’ll keep saying it on the record. I am not going to try to validate falsified information,” Brazile said. “I have my documents. I have my files. Thank God I have not had my personal emails ripped off from me and stolen and given to some criminals to come back altered.”
Megyn Kelly, who discussed the media’s impact on the electoral process at the Women in the World New York Summit earlier this year, has been silent thus far about her reported role in the ouster of former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes after allegations surfaced that he had sexually harassed employees — Kelly reportedly among them. According to Vanity Fair contributing editor Sarah Ellison, Kelly, whose contract with Fox News ends next year, intends to address the incident in her forthcoming book.
