Makeup giant CoverGirl made a landmark announcement on Tuesday when the company introduced its newest brand ambassador: For the first time in its 55-year history, CoverGirl will have a male spokesperson. James Charles Dickinson, better known simply as James Charles on YouTube where he’s become a star, is a 17-year-old high school student from Bethpage, New York, and he’s landed the gig. The news was broken by an actual CoverGirl model, Katy Perry, with a post on Instagram. “Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles!” Perry wrote.

Charles is a makeup artist whose senior portraits went viral last month after he announced on Twitter that he “brought my ring light with me so my highlight would be poppin.” His first order of business with CoverGirl will be to market the company’s new So Lashy! mascara.

“All of our COVERGIRLs are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful. James Charles is no exception,” CoverGirl said in a statement.
