Going their own way

Rejecting relationships with women, “meninists” create an online community

September 27, 2016

Thousands of men who have sworn off relationships with women are creating virtual communities on Reddit and other sites, The Independent reports. Calling themselves “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW), they take to online forums to denigrate heterosexual relationships: they encourage husbands to divorce their wives, reject the “effort” required to obtain “sex and company,” and idolize the “herbivore men” of Japan, who shun romance and sex.

The core principles of MGTOW are, however, far more sinister than the simple rejection of love and sex. These men believe that feminism is disadvantageous to the world’s male population. Their forums decry pop songs as feminist propaganda and posit that gender equality is a farce. MGTOW aspire to free themselves of all social constraints, and believe social-justice activists, supporters of LGBTQ rights, and men who are “chivalrous” to women detract from that goal.

The origins of the movement are somewhat nebulous, but claims that “MGTOW is not as old as fire, but it’s as old as a man’s first discovery of it. If MTGOW is fire, then perhaps feminism is gasoline.” OK, then.
