Alicia Machado, the 1996 winner of the Miss Universe pageant, played a pivotal role in the first of three 2016 presidential debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on Monday night. Clinton, in a surprise move near the end of the debate that put Trump on the ropes and gave her the clear upper hand, recounted Machado’s demeaning encounter with Trump two decades ago, in which the billionaire pageant owner mocked Machado for having gained weight. She was 18 at the time. By Tuesday morning, Trump all but confirmed Clinton’s account and bemoaned Machado’s weight gain again — a display that drew more criticism and defied any political logic given his trouble with women voters. Later in the morning, the Clinton campaign released a video in which Machado discusses the experience, 20 years later, and recalls feeling like a “lab rat” as Trump accompanied her to the gym in an effort to see to it that she lost the weight she’d put on. And really, that’s just the beginning of her story. Watch the full video below.
