Jim Carrey facing wrongful death suit over ex-girlfriend’s suicide

September 20, 2016

Jim Carrey is being sued for allegedly supplying prescription drugs to his ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, who died of an overdose last year. White’s widower Mark Burton has brought the suit, claiming that Carrey obtained the drugs under the false name “Arthur King.” Bottles prescribed to King were found in White’s home after her death, according to the lawsuit.

White died in September 2015. The Los Angeles County Coroner found that she had ingested lethal amounts of Ambien, propranolol, and Percocet. It is believed that White committed suicide.

Burton claims that White had a history of mental illness, and that she had attempted suicide before her death. As a result, Burton says, Carrey acted with “reckless disregard of causing serious harm and injury” to White by allegedly giving her prescription drugs.

Carrey has denied any wrongdoing, and called the lawsuit a “heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.” In a statement, Carrey vowed to fight the allegations against him.

“It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away,” he said. “But there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world.”
