Call to action

Jill Soloway urges viewers to ‘topple the patriarchy’ during Emmy acceptance speech

By WITW Staff on September 19, 2016

Transparent director Jill Soloway scooped up her second Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series last night, and capped her acceptance speech with a pretty spectacular call to action.

After accepting her award, Soloway thanked Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for lending a platform to her show about a transgender woman, and referred to Transparent as a “revolution.”

“I’ve always wanted to be part of a movement — civil rights movement, the feminist movement,” Soloway said. “This TV show allows me to take my dreams about unlikeable Jewish people, queer folk, trans folk, and make them the heroes.”

She also thanked the transgender community for their “lived lives,” denounced violence against trans people, and finished off her speech by yelling, “Topple the patriarchy!”

We expect nothing less than this kind of fearlessness from someone who wears bright red high tops to a prestigious awards ceremony.
