Teenager who molested a baby girl receives suspended sentence

September 15, 2016

Kraigen Grooms, a 19-year-old man from Iowa who filmed himself sexually abusing* a baby girl, was handed a suspended 10-year sentence, avoiding further jail time. Grooms was captured after a federal manhunt after photos of him had showed up on a child porn site. Investigators learned that the teen was from Ottumwa, Texas, and found out that he had molested the baby, who they said was between 12 and 18 months old, in April 2013. After being arrested in 2014, he spent time in juvenile detention and county jails, while his trial was delayed. He pleaded guilty to the sex abuse charges in July, and was consequently released from prison with a GPS monitoring device. His sentence, handed down on Monday, includes five years of supervised release and Grooms will be registered as a sex offender for life.  It was not clear whether the suspended sentence included credit for “time served,” reporters said.
