Woman faces barrage of harassment after tweeting about 9/11 and black history

A much needed history lesson on post-slavery America

Elexus Jionde (Twitter).

On the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Elexus Jionde, a 22-year-old history graduate from Charlotte tweeted out a pointed observation that immediately went viral: “White people can’t ever let go of 9/11, a single day in our history, but want you to get over 300 years of racial oppression lol.” The tweet racked up more than 50,000 retweets in less than a day, so Jionde decided to add some power to her viral success by tweeting out historical facts about the KKK, Jim Crow laws and other examples of racism throughout U.S. history, “threaded” together with her initial tweet, so they would show up together.  She ended the tweetstorm by tweeting, “So to end this thread, never forget 9/11. For sure. But don’t forget the rest of this shit either. Please.”

While Jionde largely received encouraging comments, she also faced a barrage of online harassment with people hurling racial abuse or even death threats at her. She reported the abusive remarks to Twitter, but no action was taken. Jionde then noticed that her tweets had been “un-threaded” (i.e. no longer linked) making it hard for people to see the tweets in order, with their full context, causing the online abuse to intensify. “Once the first tweet became disembodied from the rest, the harassment poured in,” she told BuzzFeed. “I’ve received death threats, racist jokes, and a lot of tweets regarding my future children having cancer. That [first] tweet has since gone viral, and without the 40+ tweets accompanying it, there are people in my mentions telling me that I’m a disgrace to my race and country for saying 9/11 only killed white people, when that isn’t what I said at all.”

A Storify user reconstructed the entire thread as it was meant to be consumed in sequence and
