A 36-year-old Scottish woman, who was wearing traditional Muslim dress, had her blouse set on fire in Midtown Manhattan, The New York Daily News reports. The woman was walking down Fifth Avenue when she saw a man pull out a lighter. She then felt heat on her arm, and noticed that her shirt was aflame, police said. She was not badly hurt.
The NYPD hate crimes task force is investigating the incident and searching for the suspect. He was captured on CCTV footage wearing a black tank top, black pants, and a black hat.
Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told the Daily News that he is “concerned” about the incident.
“[I]t’s symptomatic of the overall rise in Islamophobic sentiment in our society,” Hooper said.
The suspected attack comes on the heels of another hate crime in New York City. Last Thursday in Brooklyn, a 32-year-old woman punched two Muslim mothers in the face and tried to rip off their hijabs.
