Donald Cline, a retired fertility doctor from Indianapolis used his own sperm instead of donated sperm on at least 50 occasions, court documents allege. The facts stem from cases that occurred decades ago, but the 77-year-old doctor is said to have fathered at least eight biological children in this way. The abuse came to light when some of his adult children started investigating their ancestry through DNA tests. One of them found out she was related to at least eight other people in the database, while two others discovered that their mothers were both patients of Cline. According to an affidavit, he had told six people who suspected that he was their biological father that the used his own sperm in about 50 cases, beginning in the 1970s, whenever he didn’t have a donor sample available — all the while telling his patients the sperm they were receiving came from medical residents or students. According to the documents, Cline claimed he “felt that he was helping women because they really wanted a baby.” However, as the state of Indiana began looking into the complaints he categorically denied the accusations and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. “It is very sickening to think he ran his practice up until the time he was about 70,” an unidentified donor child said. Cline was released on his own recognizance.
