New challenges

Taraji P. Henson says she wants to play a man in a feature film

With the third season of Fox’s hit show Empire premiering September 21, an autobiography coming out in October, and the highly anticipated Hidden Figures — a film about the role of black women in the space race — coming out this winter, Taraji P. Henson’s stock is at an all-time high. Asked about how long she intended to play Cookie while on Empire’s Chicago set, the actress said she wanted the show to succeed, but that she also wanted to take on new challenges — one of which, she revealed, would be playing a man in a feature film.

“I love features ’cause it’s a change for everybody to remember she’s a character actress, not just Cookie,” said Henson. “I haven’t played a superhero yet, I haven’t played a psycho character yet. I want to play a man, like I want to really disappear. I have so much to do.”

Henson added that her rising popularity is leading to more and more offers, and shared her thoughts on the chemistry of the actors on set.
