Opening up

‘Glee’ actress Naya Rivera says she underwent an abortion to focus on her career

In a new autobiography, Glee actress Naya Rivera revealed that she became pregnant during filming for her role as cheerleader Santana Lopez, but terminated the pregnancy so she could focus on her career. The actress discovered that she was pregnant in 2010, just weeks after splitting up with then-boyfriend Ryan Dorsey. She underwent an abortion on her day off, and returned to filming the day after the procedure. Dorsey and Rivera have since reunited, and Rivera become mother to a boy, Josey, in September of last year.

“It was very scary to open up about everything,” Rivera told People Magazine. “It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”

In the new book, Sorry Not Sorry, Rivera also opened up about her struggles with anorexia as a young teen. “If my mom had packed a lunch for me, I’d either trash it or find some excuse to give it away,” the actress revealed.

Rivera said that she hoped the book could raise awareness about the health issues faced by young women, and give some perspective for girls who might otherwise feel alone in their situation. One day, she added, she hopes her son reads her book as well. “I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face,” said Rivera.
