105-year-old woman gets firefighters for her birthday

By WITW Staff on August 24, 2016

Asked what she wanted for her 105th birthday, Ivena “Ivy” Smailes, a British woman living at the Addison Court Care Home in Crawcrook, England, said that the only thing she wanted was “a cake delivered by a fireman with tattoos.” Thanks to Debra Carter, a worker at the facility, Smailes got her wish. Five firefighters from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service joined Ivy for her birthday celebration — one even climbing through the window to personally deliver her cake. 40 of Smailes’ friends and family also attended the festivities. “It was great!” said Smailes of the party. “Out of this world.”

And all because the lady loves a burly firefighter! Congratulations to Ivy Smailes from Crawcrook who has celebrated her 105th birthday from all at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Carter said that the request for firemen wasn’t really a shock coming from Smailes, and that the logistics were surprisingly easy to sort out. “We had the local fire brigade come … through the third balcony window,” she recalled. “They were more than happy to help!” Guests also enjoyed cake, dancers, and singers performing Smailes’ favorite songs by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Al Johnson.

Despite having received Smailes’ official seal of approval, Carter conceded she might not be able to meet expectations for the centenarian’s next birthday. “She’s already said that next year she wants to meet Prince Harry,” Carter revealed.
