Amber Heard, the actor and model who was married to Johnny Depp announced she would split her $7 million divorce settlement evenly between two charities: the American Civil Liberties Union, for their efforts to combat violence against women, and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The celebrity couple filed for divorce in May, with Heard alleging that Depp had abused her multiple times throughout their relationship. Depp denied allegations, and his attorney speculated that Heard’s claims were false accusations leveled to get more money out of a settlement. The issue was settled on Tuesday, when the couple released a joint statement reading, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”

By donating her entire settlement to charities, Heard wanted to show that “money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves,” as she wrote in a personal statement. She also pledged to help the organizations with future donations. Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU praised Heard’s generosity, saying he felt confident that it will “help other women live safely and freely.”
