Taylor Swift has proven herself to be many things: singer who shatters music sales records; outspoken feminist; savvy businesswoman who took on tech giant Apple and won; and ardent supporter of good causes. Earlier this year, Swift donated $250,000 to help Kesha’s legal battle against the music producer she accused of rape. On Tuesday, Swift said she was making another huge donation to people in great need by pledging $1 million to victims displaced by flooding in Louisiana. The state’s governor John Bel Edwards said Tuesday that more than 40,000 homes were damaged in the widespread flooding and at least 11 people have lost their lives.

In a statement, Swift said her fondness of the area is one reason she decided to help out. “We began The 1989 World Tour in Louisiana, and the wonderful fans there made us feel completely at home,” the 26-year-old singer said. “The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes this week is heartbreaking.” Swift also called for others to follow her lead. “I encourage those who can to help out and send your love and prayers their way during this devastating time,” she said.
