Val McDermid, a Scottish crime writer had the perfect response when a random Twitter user informed her that he enjoyed some of her books, but “since discovering that you are a #feminist I’ve decided not to buy/read any more of them” — telling him pointedly, “Your loss. You probably struggled with them anyway.”

The exchange caught the eye of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling — who has made a reputation for herself shutting down online trolls — who told McDermid she’d be ordering “two of every copy from now on” and joked that McDermid is “one of those [dangerous] stealth feminists who lure you in by writing books you enjoy.”

Many of Rowling’s followers then chimed in, tweeting their own jokes or vowing to put McDermid on their summer reading list. Harlan Coben, a famous American thriller writer crime author, also joined the fray, responding that it’d be hard to find an author to read, because “every decent one I know is a feminist.” Shutting down internet trolls: the quickest way to gain yourself a new army of devoted readers!
