A mural depicting Hillary Clinton wearing a revealing stars and stripes swimsuit set off controversy in Melbourne, Australia, so the artist behind the work gave it a makeover — which is proving controversial. The original mural painted by a street artist known as Lushsux showed a large-breasted Clinton, the first woman to be nominated for president by a major U.S. political party, wearing a low-cut American flag swimsuit. Tucked inside the side straps of the swimsuit were $100 dollar bills. A local city councilman deemed the work “offensive because of the depiction of a near naked woman, not on the basis of disrespect to Hillary Clinton.” Lushsux’s Instagram account was suspended after he posted an image of the mural on the popular photo-sharing site. In an interview, he told CNN he added the $100 dollar bills as a “reaction to Instagram deleting my account a day after I posted Hillary,” adding that the timing of his suspension was “quite strange.”

His solution to appease critics of the racy image was to paint over it so the mural now depicts Clinton wearing a burqa, a full-body traditional garment used by some Muslim to cover their bodies when going out in public.

Lushsux, whose Instagram account was subsequently reinstated, posted the new image on Instagram, along with a video showing the transformation take place. “This is no longer a wall of a supposed ‘offensive and near naked’ Hillary Clinton, it is now a depiction of a beautiful Muslim woman,” he said in the post.

“If you do consider it offensive,” Lushsux added, “you are a sexist, racist, Islamophobic, xenophobic, uncultured and ignorant bigot.” The burqa has been a hotly-debated item of clothing around the world, with calls in some European countries for bans on women wearing them in public.
