U.S. team to field a record number of female athletes at Rio Olympics

Of the 555 athletes on Team U.S.A.’s Olympic roster for Rio this year, a history-making 292 are women. It is the largest number of women to compete for any nation in the history of the Games, topping the previous high from China in 2008. The host nation’s team included 289 women that year.

It’s only the second time females have outnumbered the males for the U.S. delegation. The United States will compete across 27 sports and the team features 191 returning Olympians.

The Rio Games begin on August 5.
