117-year-old Mexican woman dies mere hours after receiving birth certificate

Trinidad Alvarez Lira, a 117-year old woman living in Mexico City died mere hours after finally being granted a birth certificate proving that she was born in 1898, documentation that would entitle her to receive government benefits, The Associated Press reports. The woman had been waiting for years to obtain the documents from the city’s department of social development, because she needed proof of her age to receive all the old age government benefits she was eligible for. Lira died of a heart attack on Wednesday, before even cashing a single check.
