Christy Sheats, the 42-year-old Texas mom who authorities say shot her own two daughters to death on Friday before being killed by police, may have done so in order to spite her husband, according to a close family friend. Sheats allegedly shot her two daughters, Taylor Sheats, 22, and Madison Sheats, 17, after calling a family meeting.
New evidence released by the Fort Bend Sheriff’s office on Tuesday included phone calls made by the two girls to 911 in which one of the young women can be heard begging, “Please, don’t shoot. Please, I’m sorry. Don’t do it.” A male voice, presumably the girls’ father, Jason Sheats, is discernable in the background saying, “I’m sorry! I promise you whatever you want.”
A third 911 call, from a neighbor, described the scene as it spilled from the family’s house into the street. “There’s a lady with a gun … she’s coming out of the house right now, there are two people shot outside,” the witness can be heard telling police. The neighbor watched and narrated as a woman “wearing a purple dress” stood over one of the victims firing with a gun until stopping, apparently out of bullets, and re-entering the house. Soon, however, the woman was back outside. “She’s coming back again,” said the neighbor. “She has bullets now.” The neighbor then relayed that the shooter had begun firing upon the victim’s bodies once more. Officers arriving on the scene soon afterwards ordered the mother to drop her weapon. When she refused, an officer opened fire and killed her.
Madison Davey, a close family friend, described the confrontation between Sheets and her husband. “He told Christy, ‘Just shoot yourself. Make it easy on all of us, just shoot yourself,’ and she said, ‘No, that’s not what this is about, this is about punishing you.'” Davey also said that Jason was “the best dad ever” and that Christy had been “toxic” and “mentally unstable.” The murders took place on Jason’s birthday, and only days before Taylor Sheats was to have been married to Juan Sebastian Lugo, her boyfriend of four years.
