A Texas mom was killed by police after shooting her two daughters outside her home in Houston. Christy Sheats, 42, was standing near the bodies of her two daughters as they bled to death from bullet wounds when officers arrived on the scene Friday night, police said. Sheats had a gun in her hand, according to authorities. She was shot by an officer with the Fulshear Police Department after officers demanded she drop her weapon and, they said, she refused. Sheats’ husband and the girl’s father, Jason Sheats, witnessed the scene unfold. Though he was uninjured, police told reporters, he was so upset they saw fit to take him to a local hospital for evaluation. The couple had recently reunited after a marital separation, neighbors told police. It had been Jason’s birthday on Friday.

The shooting occurred after a family argument, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said, but it was unclear why the mother opened fire on her daughters. Twenty-two-year-old Taylor Sheats died at the scene, along with her sister, 17-year-old Madison Sheats. Neighbors interviewed on the scene expressed shock at the violence. “This is not the Christy that I know. It’s just not,” said Catherine Knowles, a friend of Christy’s. “I thought it was the wrong person. It had to be.”

A representative from the Sheriff’s office said that authorities had visited the family’s home for “previous altercations” involving the mother’s “mental crisis.”
