Oscar Pistorius said this week that he admits he deserves a long prison sentence for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, but said he did not want to “waste my life” behind bars and that Steenkamp wouldn’t want that for him. The comments came during the first TV interview Pistorius has given since his girlfriend’s death. The Paralympic athlete known as the “blade runner” was convicted first of manslaughter in her death, and later of murder after prosecutors appealed the initial decision. He is awaiting sentencing.

“If I was afforded the opportunity of redemption I would like to help the less fortunate like I had in my past,” he said. “I would like to believe that if Reeva could look down upon me that she would want me to live that life.”

Pistorius has admitting that he shot and killed Steenkamp but said it was not premeditated. He says the shooting was an accident, as he believed there was an intruder in the couple’s apartment in the middle of the night. Prosecutors said Pistorius was jealous of Steenkkamp’s ex-boyfriend and he shot her during an argument.
