Man arrested for allegedly sexually abusing girl, 13, on flight

An Oregon man was arrested by the FBI last week after being accused of groping a 13-year-old girl while on board an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Portland. According to The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the criminal complaint in the case, a flight attendant passing out beverages noticed Chad Cameron Camp touching the crotch of the 13-year-old girl, who was traveling unaccompanied, seated next to him. The flight attendant reported seeing “a single tear coming down the victim’s cheek” as the assault took place. At that point, the flight crew separated Camp and the 13-year-old girl for the remainder of the journey. When the plane landed, the girl was rushed off and federal authorities were waiting to arrest Camp. He was charged with abusive sexual contact.

Brent Goodfellow, a lawyer representing the 13-year-old girl, was quick to criticize American Airlines over the incident, saying that the family will definitely file a lawsuit, and that the incident was preventable. The flight was only half full, and as passengers were still boarding, Camp was offered his choice of seats. But instead of picking a spot with an empty seat next to it, he insisted on sitting right next to the 13-year-old girl, which the flight crew allowed him to do. “This was 30 minutes of hell for this young lady,” Goodfellow said, dismissing the notion that the girl had been rescued by the flight attendant. “The family paid $300 extra and this is what they get?” he said, referring to the additional fee airlines charge parents who send their children on flights unaccompanied.

“American cares deeply about our young passengers and is committed to providing a safe and pleasant travel experience for them,” the airline said in a statement, adding that it’s taking “these matters very seriously.” But this isn’t the first such incident to occur aboard an American Airlines flight. Less than a year ago, a young girl traveling alone awoke from a nap to find a 57-year-old Pakistani doctor allegedly touching her inappropriately. “I can’t move cause the seat belt sign is on and I want to get away,” the girl reportedly said in desperate texts to her mother. “Mommy, I’m scared.”
